Fifty Shades of Grey…or Red…or Purple: Ombre Sugar Cookies

12 Aug

When I make a batch of cookie dough, I often have a little bit left over.  With the extra dough, I usually make a few random shapes to decorate when I have free time.  Un-iced, the cookies store very well in the freezer.  When I saw SweetAmb’s ombre cookie tutorial, I knew I wanted to try to make some ombre-style cookies, but in my own way, using a few stashed cookies from the freezer.

Instead of varied shades of icing, I decided to make an ombre effect using colored sugars.  I love the effect, especially on a round cookie!

A brief tutorial, after the jump.

It’s a Nice Day for a White Wedding Dress: Heart-Shaped Wedding Dress and Tuxedo Cookies

29 Jul

Despite the fact that I own upwards of 500 cookie cutters, when I decided to make wedding-themed cookies for an engagement party I decided to forgo the wedding cake and dress cutters and opt for the simple heart shape.  I had initially wanted to use my tuxedo and wedding dress stencils, but the cutter made a cookie larger than I would have liked.  I opted instead to pipe the design myself.

While the shape is simple, the possibilities for designs are endless.

Faster, Stronger, Cookie-r! Olympic Cookies

22 Jul

It’s that time again–the Olympic Games are back!  The Summer Olympics Games, specifically.  Since I can’t be in London to join in the festivities, I created a few Olympic-themed cookies here at home.

In addition to Olympic rings and torches, I created a few pictograms of Summer Olympic events.

The secret to these Olympic rings? Cheating.

These Olympic pictograms represent the Olympic events of fencing, swimming, and rhythmic dancing.  At least, I think that’s rhythmic gymnastics–it might be spell casting!

Baby, You’re a Firework: Independence Day Cookies

1 Jul

Growing up in a small town, my family never missed an Independence Day fireworks display at the local mall.  We would park on the highway a few miles from our house and enjoy the show without worrying about the traffic.  All grown-up, my family still enjoys a good fireworks display, and we catch them as often as we can.  While there are a lot of symbols associated with July 4th, fireworks will always be my favorite.

Cookies, in the shape of the United States, feature the Washington, D.C. skyline and a fireworks display.

Long May She Reign: Diamond Jubilee Cookies

17 Jun

I’m going to let you in on a secret:  I am a huge fan of the British Monarchy.  Not in a political sense, but certainly from a souvenir/kitsch perspective.

Last year, I threw a wedding-themed dessert party to honor the wedding of HRH Prince William to Catherine Middleton.  It was an exhausting endeavor (mostly because I insisted on waking up at 4AM to watch the wedding on live television).

This year, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Diamond Jubilee–60 years on the throne.  I hosted a dinner party, and handed out three Jubilee-themed cookies favors to the guests at the end of the evening.

The three Diamond Jubilee-themed cookies included a stylized version of the Imperial State Crown, a diamond, and an image of The Queen.

Cookie-related details after the jump.
