It’s a Nice Day for a White Wedding Dress: Heart-Shaped Wedding Dress and Tuxedo Cookies

29 Jul

Despite the fact that I own upwards of 500 cookie cutters, when I decided to make wedding-themed cookies for an engagement party I decided to forgo the wedding cake and dress cutters and opt for the simple heart shape.  I had initially wanted to use my tuxedo and wedding dress stencils, but the cutter made a cookie larger than I would have liked.  I opted instead to pipe the design myself.

While the shape is simple, the possibilities for designs are endless.

Faster, Stronger, Cookie-r! Olympic Cookies

22 Jul

It’s that time again–the Olympic Games are back!  The Summer Olympics Games, specifically.  Since I can’t be in London to join in the festivities, I created a few Olympic-themed cookies here at home.

In addition to Olympic rings and torches, I created a few pictograms of Summer Olympic events.

The secret to these Olympic rings? Cheating.

These Olympic pictograms represent the Olympic events of fencing, swimming, and rhythmic dancing.  At least, I think that’s rhythmic gymnastics–it might be spell casting!

A bit of step-by-step, after the jump…

I Find My Thrill: Blueberry Pie

8 Jul

When done right, the fruit pie is a thing of beauty.  For me, the ideal fruit pie has a tender, flaky crust and a filling with a clean fruit flavor that isn’t too gummy or too runny.  Generally, I find that making a well-made pie can be an exhausting matter.  This pie is no exception.  However, it’s a damn good pie with a delicious blueberry filling that holds up to cutting without having the texture of a gumdrop.

I can’t say that my method for pie baking will make pie baking any easier, but it will certainly make all of the hard work worth it by creating a delicious pie that your friends and family will coo over.

A delicious slice of blueberry pie perched on the plate just long enough to photograph. He disappeared shortly after and has not been seen since.

The crust recipe is adapted from Martha Stewart’s pate brisée.  The filling is adapted from America’s Test Kitchen blueberry pie (subscription required).

The recipe follows, below.

Baby, You’re a Firework: Independence Day Cookies

1 Jul

Growing up in a small town, my family never missed an Independence Day fireworks display at the local mall.  We would park on the highway a few miles from our house and enjoy the show without worrying about the traffic.  All grown-up, my family still enjoys a good fireworks display, and we catch them as often as we can.  While there are a lot of symbols associated with July 4th, fireworks will always be my favorite.

Cookies, in the shape of the United States, feature the Washington, D.C. skyline and a fireworks display.

More freedom-lovin’ fireworks after the jump…
